ELCO
ELECTRIC OUTBOARD MOTOR: EP-5
COMPLETE 5HP ELECTRIC OUTBOARD BOAT MOTOR SYSTEM
- 24 VOLTS
Pure Electric Outboard Motors/
Electric Marine Propulsion Systems
The
Elco EP-5 is a powerful electric marine propulsion system
- perfect for small yacht tender boats, small boats, inflatable
boats, canoes and more.... Combining affordability and environmentally
clean and efficient marine propulsion.
This
5HP 24 Volt electric outboard marine motor is built on the same
frame/ leg as the Elco EP9.9 HP 48 Volt motor. As the battery
system is just 24 Volts this means that the cost of the battery
system is much less with this motor and the overall battery
system size and weight is much smaller - making it an affordable
and compact system for small boats such as inflatable tender
boats, canoes and more.
The
Elco outboard marine motors come ready to connect and run -
the leg is filled with gear oil and the motors have been pre-programmed
and test run at the factory for 1 hour.
Most
of the Elco outboards run at 4,500-5,000 RPM with a 2-1 gear
reduction ratio (the EP50 can run up to 6,000 RPM). The lower
leg unit is a proprietary Elco part with a single gear in the
gearbox. Compareable gas outboards typically have several gears
in their gearbox so with just 1 gear the Elco is typically more
reliable. About the only part that can be sourced through a
Yamaha outboard parts center or dealer is the water pump's impeller.
If after several years of use and you ever find vibration occurring
and you are certain that you have never grounded the leg/ hit
it on a hard object, then the first thing that should be checked
is the leg's oil level. If that is OK, then the second thing
we should look at through a reputable marine mechanic is the
water pump's impeller. Water pump impellers do not last forever
and can be damaged quickly if the motor is run out of water
or if the water intake becomes blocked.
How
do I choose - Long Shaft or Short Shaft?
Take a tape measure and measure from the top of the transom
mounting plate that we will clamp the motor to and measure
down to the water line and add 1 inch or so.
If
the measurement is 17.5 inches choose the Short Shaft outboard
If
the measurement is 22.5 inches choose the Long Shaft outboard

extra safe ABYC approved fuse assembly from Pinnacle.
It is available through Blue Sea Marine Dealers
and the part numbers are 5113 and 5007100.
Panther
Electric Hydraulic Model 40 Trim and Tilt 55-0040
This
is an optional part that many Elco outboard motor
owners
opt for on the smaller motors when they operate
in shallow waters, frequently make beach landings
and/ or when they want to be easily able to lift
the motor out of the water.
In
addition, the Panther system can make installing
the Elco outboards easier on some larger boats that
may have a flat rear transom not necessarily designed
for outboard motors.
This
trim and tilt is designed specifically for the weekend
fisherman. The Model 40 is a heavy-duty, fabricated
aluminum bracket. Holds 2 and 4 stroke motors up
to 150 lbs. Its powerful electro-mechanical actuator
provides automatic trim and tilt with the push of
a button. Bracket comes with electrical relay and
2-button switch with a 12' power cord that connects
to a 12 Volt battery system.
If
needed, we can provide a Victron Energy Orion 48
Volt to 12 Volt DC converter at additional cost
so that you can power the Panther with the Elco
motor's 48 Volt DC battery system.
Do
you need a "Series Battery Connection
Harness"?
Pinnacle Innovations will be more than happy
to supply you with a high quality Custom Made
Series Battery Wiring Harness using Amercian
made tinned copper marine power cabling, tinned
copper marine cable ends with round eyelet
holes, adhesive backed heavy duty marine heat
shrink tubing and the matching Elco motor

We
also only use the much higher rated Class
T fuse sets made by Blue Sea Systems instead
of ANL or MEGA fuses (the ANL and MEGA Fuse
holders are primarily plastic, can overheat
and come apart causing a dangerous situation).
We can also make the cables whatever length
that you may need and if you need the cables
to be longer than the standard 82" we
can also look at using larger diameter power
cable.

Do
you need a high Voltage DC Disconnect Switch(s)?
According
to the ABYC Marine Electrical Code Book, the answer
is "YES". For all electric propulsion
maritime vessels it is required to have a manual
disconnect switch for the motor/ battery system
that can handle both the Voltage of the Elco motor
system as well as the maximum Amperage of the Elco
motor.
If
you would like, we can also supply you with 1 or
2 of the appropriate DC Disconnect Switches to make
your Elco motor system installation complete and
up to ABYC Standards. The actual ABYC Code stipulates
that we in fact should have two DC disconnects -
one for the main positive and one for the main negative
power cables.

ELCO
EP SERIES WARRANTY:
Limited Warranty, 2 years labour, 3 years parts
NOTE: Do not run the motor out
of the water - it will damage the water pump and void
your warranty.
Battery
System:
Please note that the Elco motors as priced do
not include a battery system. Customers can source
their own deep cycle battery system or we can
offer a variety of battery systems:
Lead-acid
batteries: lowest cost, heavy, bulky, require
maintenance, slow recharging, lowest life expectancy/
cycle life (up to about 600 cycles but usually
start losing capacity after about 300 cycles)
AGM
batteries: moderate cost, heavy, bulky, require
less maintenance, slow recharging, improved
life expectancy/ cycle life (up to 1,000 to
1,200 cycles)
Lithionics
lithium-ion batteries: best overall
system with highest performance, next to zero
maintenance, lightweight, fast charging, compact
and exceptional life expecatncy - up to 5,800
cycles at 50% discharge rate. The only downside
is these batteries cost significantly more than
lead-acid batteries.
In
order for us to specify and quote a battery system
we ask that you provide us the following information:
For
how many hours per day do you want to be able
to cruise?
At
approximately what % of full throttle do you expect
to use on average?
What
is the weight and size of your boat?
What
are the physical dimensions of the battery area
that you have?
Please
tell us about the electrical outlet(s) you have
access to to plug the battery charger into. Example:
110 Volt AC outlet on a 15 Amp circuit breaker
100 feet away from the boat.
Please
let us know if you have any roof or deck space
available for possible rigid or semi-flexible
solar panels and the dimensions of such areas.
With
this information we can then calculate the Amp hours
of battery capacity required to give you the desired
running time before recharging. Depending on your
budget and other factors we can then quote you some
battery options. Please keep in mind that to be able
to run all day at a high percentage of throttle may
require a substantial battery bank. For many small
boats (under 25 feet) we can provide an economical
battery system that can provide a few hours enjoyment
but many small boats (such as a 10 foot tender boat)
may not have enough available space or carrying capacity
for a battery bank that can run the motor more than
1 or 2 hours at high throttle.
For
applications that require longer running times the
most economical way to go may be what we call a "hybrid-electric
battery system" where we can decrease the size
and cost of the battery system by adding a Polar Power
DC diesel generator or other type of generator.
TROUBLESHOOTING
- Elco Electric Outboard Motor Service
Notes:
In the unlikely event that something goes wrong with
the Elco electric inboard or outboard marine motor
there are lights that flash on the electric controller
(located under the engine cover on the top of the
motor) and that tells us what is wrong. It really
depends on what the controller tells us as to whether
the motor can be repaired quickly and easily locally
or if it needs to go back to Elco for repair.
In the rare event that your OUTBOARD motor is causing
vibration after being operated for a long time (many,
many outings or a period of years) the first thing
that we would want to check is the lower leg's water
pump impeller. Over long periods of time (or if you
run the motor out of the water) the rubberized fins
on the impeller can become damaged or worn. For both
the Elco EP5 and EP9.9 there is a direct Yamaha replacement
kit with part number 6EO-W0078-A2. This can be serviced
by a marine outboard mechanic.
In
the rare event that you strike the leg on a rock or
something hard and vibration results, then it may
be possible that the whole lower leg may need replacing
on the outboard motor. Not to worry though, Elco has
you covered with economical lower leg replacements
and the price for the lower leg on both the EP5 and
EP9.9 hp is $790.00 USD.
Elco
Inboard Motors: Please read the instruction manual
on the inboards (click on PDF link below). We will
help with a correct prop solution: we need the boat
specs and what the diameter of the prop that the owner
wants to use. It is very important that the pitch
is correct other wise the motor will not function
correctly - you can either go in over Voltage or under
Voltage and you will not get the performance that
you should from the motor and this can cause problems.
There is a procedure that is in the manual for the
inboards – you need to water test and take down the
speed you are going and the rpms and the Amps the
motor is pulling (all that is displayed on the display
that come with the unit but you will have to use a
hand held GPS to get the speed data) at first low
speed, then half throttle and then full throttle.
This will tells us if the pitch is correct and you
are getting full Horsepower and reaching 1,500 RPM
- 1,800 RPM is about the maximum for the Elco EP Inboards.

outboard boat motors:
POLAR
POWER DC MARINE GENERATORS
Why
choose Polar Power DC Diesel Generators?
Efficiency is the answer. These diesel generators
are perfect for battery charging and can reduce
the size and cost of the battery bank.
American
made Polar Power DC diesel generators with 5kW
to 25kW output or more. Perfect for use with Elco
motors when long distance electric power is needed
for mid-size boats.

There are various factors in determining how far you can go
before you need to recharge. Winds, tides, currents, weights,
propeller type, vessel speed and battery size are some examples.
With a generator on board running time can be extended or made
continuous. Below is a graphical representation comparing Diesel
fuel consumption for an Elco electric propulsion system using
lead-type batteries versus a diesel engine. NOTE: With Lithionics
Battery Lithium-ion batteries, the savings and ranges will be
much greater.
What size Elco Electric Marine
Motor is right for my boat?
There is some overlap between motor and boat sizes so choosing
the right size motor for you and your vessel can sometimes require
some personal expertise to make the right choice. In selecting
the correct size electric motor, some general tips are - in areas
with strong tides and currents, choose the next larger size motor,
and the same goes for weight - if your boat is heavy for its length,
choose the next size up.
Elco
Motor Yacht has also developed a robust and easy motor coupling
system to allow for twin or triple motor installations. This can
be used when a vessel exceeds 85 feet or if you need a faster
cruising speed. Please contact us about the motor coupling
optionby email.
The
table below serves a good starting point for most boaters. The
table also gives boaters an idea of what sort of investment they
will be looking at.
