Monaco RV Solar System - PortableThis client is off-grid much of the time and wanted to minimize generator use so we installed a four Q-Cell Duo 385 Watt solar panels. These panels are exceptionally efficient and good value but they also provide excellent output in low light/ partially shaded situations. As large rigid solar panels have little or no bracing on the backside we generally cannot use them for RV or marine applications because when they are laid flat gravity and road bumps/ waves can put undue stress in the middle of the solar panel that can crack the solar panels. This client wanted to be able to deploy the solar panels on any site where they would receive the best sunshine - regardless of how/ where the vehicle was parked. From his past boondocking experiences with a smaller RV he would often place solar panels on a hillside - possibly 50 feet or more away from the RV. So for this project we designed and built a custom 4-panel rack that attaches to his RV's existing 2" receiver on his trailer hitch. Each of the slots maintains the solar panels in the vertical position for transport and when ready to deploy, you simply remove the 2 padlocks on the driver's side, raise the locking bars and slide out one panel at a time. We also fabricated a simple solar panel leg/ support system for each panel using 1/2" thick aluminum flatbar and stainless steel hardware so that the client can quickly and easily adjust the angle of the solar panels to the sun. As the position of the sun in the northern sky here in Canada varies a great deal, we made 2 lengths of support legs for summer or winter use. The legs neatly tuck back into the existing solar panel frame for storage.
