2018/ 2019: Elco EP12 Inboard 48 Volt Electric Marine Propulsion Motor - Small Sailboat

On this project we supplied the client with the powerful and long last Elco Motor Yachts EP 12 electric marine engine with 12 Horsepower diesel equivalent. In addition we also supplied an Elcon PFC 2000+ smart industrial 48 Volt battery charger. For this system, the client opted for a 48 Volt AGM battery bank and he also has a 2,000 Watt gas generator on board that he can use periodically for battery recharging through the Elcon PFC 2000+ battery charger.

In addition, the client opted for the high quality UK made Bruntons SIGMA Drive motor coupler that connects the Elco motor to the prop shaft. For this small sailboat project the client opted for AGM batteries.

May 2019: 56' Catamaran Lithium-ion Battery System.

Shown here is the "test mockup" of this client's 12 Volt, 1,200 Amp hour Lithionics lithium-ion battery system rated at 400 Amps constant current. As you can see in the photos our client did a really nice job of fabricating a special electronics board to mount the external BMS box, 4 port Combiner box, Victron MPPT solar charge controllers, Class T fuses and bus bars. For this application, we supplied three of the Lithionics Battery Standard Series 12 Volt/ 400 Amp hour lithium-ion batteries in the special 5D battery case.

In addition, this client opted for the "Dual Channel BMS" which separates the charge and discharge functions on the lithium-ion battery system. Also included on this project was a DC Power Solutions upgraded high output engine alternator with external Remote Rectifier which communicates with the Lithionics BMS through our FCC option (Field Circuit Control).

This whole setup fits tightly inside an existing cabinet on the vessel so it was important to do a dry fit at our workshop before the client went to his vessel on Vancouver Island.

2018 Newmar Mountain Aire RV Installation

Here, we installed:

Two Lithionics Battery Standard Series 12 Volt 400 Amp hour lithium-ion battery modules in the 5D battery case
Lithionics external Advanced Version 8 External NeverDie Battery Management System box rated at 400 Amps constant current and Lithionics 2 port Combiner box.
MasterVolt Charge Mate Pro 90 Alternator/ Battery isolator and 90 Amp current limiting switch (to properly isolate the lithium-ion battery bank from the lead-acid battery bank/ prevent overloading and prematurely burning out the vehicle's OEM alternator that also serves the engine cranking batteries).

Monaco RV Solar System - Portable

This client is off-grid much of the time and wanted to minimize generator use so we installed a four Q-Cell Duo 385 Watt solar panels. These panels are exceptionally efficient and good value but they also provide excellent output in low light/ partially shaded situations. As large rigid solar panels have little or no bracing on the backside we generally cannot use them for RV or marine applications because when they are laid flat gravity and road bumps/ waves can put undue stress in the middle of the solar panel that can crack the solar panels. This client wanted to be able to deploy the solar panels on any site where they would receive the best sunshine - regardless of how/ where the vehicle was parked. From his past boondocking experiences with a smaller RV he would often place solar panels on a hillside - possibly 50 feet or more away from the RV.

So for this project we designed and built a custom 4-panel rack that attaches to his RV's existing 2" receiver on his trailer hitch. Each of the slots maintains the solar panels in the vertical position for transport and when ready to deploy, you simply remove the 2 padlocks on the driver's side, raise the locking bars and slide out one panel at a time. We also fabricated a simple solar panel leg/ support system for each panel using 1/2" thick aluminum flatbar and stainless steel hardware so that the client can quickly and easily adjust the angle of the solar panels to the sun. As the position of the sun in the northern sky here in Canada varies a great deal, we made 2 lengths of support legs for summer or winter use. The legs neatly tuck back into the existing solar panel frame for storage.

Additional features:

Entire rack is powder coated satin black for durability.
Each slot has outdoor carpeting lining the bottom and top of the rack to make it easy to slide in/ out the solar panels without scratching them.
Panels cannot be stolen in th stored position without heavy duty metal cutting equipment.
Special bracing on the underside to prevent rack pivoting/ flexing on centre support bar.
We made up several sets of solar panel extension cables that quickly/ easily connect to waterproof exterior MC4 connector plates on the passenger side bay door.
The solar panels connect to two Victron Energy MPPT solar charge controllers that recharge the onboard Lithionics lithium-ion battery system.
On this project, we also installed/ upgraded to a Xantrex Freedom SW3012 3,000 Watt inverter with 150 Amp battery charger. As a part of this, we also installed a Blue Sea 30 Amp Shore Power breaker as the Shore Power now feeds direct to the Xantrex Freedom SW3012 and from there the AC power goes to the main existing 30 Amp 120VAC breaker panel.
This client also opted for the Victron Energy BMV712 battery monitoring system.
